I’m not surprised Jennifer Aniston endorses the Aveeno brand. Personally, Aveeno has to be the best brand to use not only to treat but cure eczema and other dry skin conditions. Unlike other prescription steroid creams, Aveeno’s key ingredient is oats which have the power to soothe, heal and ever transform skin. It’s not only natural and good to the skin but the light formula which is fragrance free is both delicate enough to use on both baby, child and adult skin.
Founded by American inventor and philanthropist brothers Albert and Sidney Musher, the Aveeno®’s brand name was inspired by Avena sativa, the Latin word for ‘oat’, which is the key ingredient in Aveeno® products. You will find all the Aveeno products available on the High street or on prescription in lotion, cream, body wash and oil forms.
The Benefits of Oats for your skin
The skin is our body’s largest and fastest growing organ which provides a natural protective barrier between ourselves and the environment to protect our body from infections, pathogen and harmful UV radiation. It’s also vital in maintaining homeostasis, helps to restrict fluid and prevents loss of moisture. Balancing skin moisture level is the key to healthy and naturally glowing skin. Associated with a long history of use in skincare, oats provide multiple benefits to all skin types, especially dry, irritated and itchy skin. It is also safe for babies’ delicate skin.
Why I swear by Aveeno
It’s no secret I suffered from eczema as a child, now an adult the eczema has long gone but I still suffer from extremely dry skin and cannot get a shower without moisturising straight afterwards. I first discovered Aveeno 15 years ago at a time when I still relied heavily on prescription steroid creams which left my skin feeling rough and dull plus it still left me suffering from very dry, itchy red patches all over my body. I desperately wanted to move away from that feeling.
The first bottle purchased was the Aveeno Skin Relief with Shea Butter Lotion at that time my skin was pretty bad, I had annoying dry flaky patch on my shin that just wouldn’t go away with steroid cream. With sheer frustration I started to use the Aveeno Skin relief nourishing lotion on my body, the lotion was very different in texture to what I was used too. The lotion was more of a balm that glided onto my skin and required only a little amount to cover a vast area. The Aveeno Shea Butter lotion promised 24 hour moisture protection, at the time I’d tried plenty of High street brands and none kept my skin hydrated for more than 2 hours. I was very surprised by the end of the day when my skin still felt comfortable. The lotion seemed to be controlling my flaky skin.
I stuck with Aveeno and applied daily, I was shocked how after a few days my uncomfortable itchy began to slowly disappear and my annoying flaky skin began to heal and that was the biggest shock of all. I’d spent my whole life suffering the embarrassment of flaky skin and now my skin started to look normal. It probably took me a few months of using Aveeno every day before my skin started to look normal with all red itchy, flaky skin patches disappearing. That’s when I finally ditched the prescription steroid creams for good!
After a couple of years using Aveeno Skin Relief with Shea Butter Lotion, I felt confident to move onto the Aveeno Daily Moisturising Cream which I now use daily on both my face and body. This lotion has more of a creamy texture but offers the same 24 hour moisturising protection and is perfect for making my skin look less dull which the Shea Butter lotion wasn’t doing. I tried the Aveeno Daily Moisturising Lotion with Lavender but I found the formula too drying on my skin plus the scented lotion was a big no, no for me.
Nowadays I can enjoy my skin without feeling embarrassed and don’t suffer the uncomfortable itchy feeling anymore.
