Now summer has finally arrived, it’s time to get that sun kissed glow. Whether you want a deep golden tan or a more subtle shimmer, there are plenty of self tanning products available out there that can help.
To achieve that flawless bronzed look, you’ll need to choose between a lotion, oil or a foam product. Both are great products but their final result depends greatly on your experience of applying fake tans and your overall skin type.
Lotion or Foam?
Are you new to the world of fake tans? Then foam is your answer. Foam is considered a better option for beginners as it doesn’t show streaks due to the way the product layers onto the skin.
Lotions on the other hand can help nourish and condition the skin but may streak. Oil can nourish and hydrate your skin while providing a streak free finish and is suitable if your skin type is sensitive or dry.

Exfoliation
To achieve the best results, make sure you exfoliate before you apply the product on your skin. This will remove dead skin cells and create a uniform surface for the tan to be applied to, which will in turn result in an even golden colour.
Invest in a tanning application mitt
There is nothing worse than orange tinted palms of your hands. Ouch, that tell tale sign that you’ve been cheating that tan. To avoid this always apply your fake tan while wearing a tanning mitten or disposable gloves. Most tanning brands have a mitten available to buy alongside your tan. The great thing about the tanning mitten is this can be washed after every use and reused.
Which is the best fake tan to buy?
There are so many brands of fake tans, it can be hard to know which is the best to use. Below is a list of my trialled and tested brands.
Bondi Sands Self Tanning Lotion
Available in Dark or Fair
Infused with Aloe Vera and Coconut, Bondi Sands is a lightweight lotion. It dries very quickly and can be left on the skin for up to six hours after which time, shower to rinse off. I found my tan developed over a day to a natural looking tan. The dark is very dark and is perfect for those with an olive complexion or wanting a darker glow.
Skinny Tan Oil
Both hydrating and streak free, the skinny tan oil smells nice and develops into a natural tan colour. No skills are required so it’s suitable for beginners alike. Apply after the shower with a quick spritz and the soft as silk scented oil formula will add an instant glow. Leave to develop into a golden medium tan that can last up to 2 weeks. As it’s an oil, it can be reapplied to maintain or top up your new tan. Plus it’s perfect for dry skin too.
Nip+Fab Fake Tan Water
The Nip+Fab tan water is streak free and gives a natural looking tan. This lightweight hydrating formula leaves no marks or stickiness so you can leave on throughout the day whilst your tan develops.
Fox Tan Rapid Tannig Elixir Lotion
Hot on the heals of the big tanning names. This brand has been formulated to increase your melanin levels prior to sun exposure. Thus giving you a beautiful sun glow without over exposure to the sun’s strong rays. You need to apply daily and at least 3-5 days prior to sun exposure to develop a long lasting deep natural looking tan.
St. Tropez Self Tan Starter Kit
This self-starter kit is perfect for all types of tanners. In the starter kit you get a smoothing body polish, a nourishing body lotion and a lightweight bronzing mousse, making it the perfect kit for achieving a gorgeous glow all year round.
