Over the years, my skin has been through many trials when trying to find my favourite combinations of skincare products (there’s been plenty) especially more so since I suffer from dry and sensitive skin. Now I’ve hit my 40’s I’m experimenting again but with my main focus on anti-aging products and ways to keep my skin looking naturally younger for longer.
So for those (like me) who want to slow down the ageing process (who doesn’t?), here are the best skincare recommendations to keep a youthful look for longer.
Keeping your skin hydrated is essential for any age but it’s extra important once you hit your forties. Use moisturisers that hydrate and locks in moisture. Natural oils and moisturisers with plant based ingredients will help too, so check out products that contain rose seed oil, coconut oil, almond oil, grape seed oil or shea butter.
As most people take great efforts to take care of their skin and boost skin moisture, using daily moisturisers and oils is the first step to keeping unwarranted dryness at bay.
MAKE SPF YOUR BEST FRIEND
Protecting yourself from harmful UV rays becomes more critical as you get older. Sun protection starts with applying sunscreen daily with SPF 30. For the best skincare, specialists advise that you apply the SPF everytime you are exposed to the sun.
Nowadays, makeup brands are adding SPF to their products. CC and BB creams are my favourites because it does other amazing things to my skin aside from sun protection such as giving my makeup a soft, matte finish without caking or drying.
GET A FACIAL
Facials are a soothing and relaxing way to pamper yourself and another self care ritual to indulge in once in a while. When performed by a professional, they can also promote higher levels of skin hydration, and eliminate more damaged skin cells at the surface layer. The result is a brighter and more youthful complexion overall, as well as skin that is far healthier and more resilient.
EAT MORE VITAMIN PACKED FOODS
Youthful looking skin always starts from within, so start by eating lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. This will expose you to a diverse range of phytonutrients that support the renewal, resilience, and overall well being of your dermis.
Foods that are high in Vitamin A can even help you preserve more of the smooth collagen layer that both defines and supports your skin. Not only will this slow the development of superficial facial wrinkling, but it can also stave off the volume loss that’s associated with far more advanced facial ageing.
INVEST IN A VITAMIN C SERUM
Alpha hydroxy acids, glycolic acid, and lactic acid are agents that are frequently used in chemical peel procedures but there are plenty of hyaluronic acid based vitamin C serum skincare products that you can use at home which are much cheaper and less painful. They work by brightening the skin and minimising the appearance of dark age spots and other blemishes to may the skin appear much younger and fresher. As the acid gently breaks down old and damaged skin cells, to reveal newer and healthier cells.
My favourite serum is Estée Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair Serum but for the budget conscientious, try my next favourite Purorganica vitamin C serum which is extremely cheaper than the Estee Lauder serum and does the same job.
Drinking lots of water can increase your hydration levels which will help promote hydrated and healthy cells. Hydration is vital, regardless of whether your skin is dry or oily. Every skin type requires moisture. Once you hit your forties, it’s even harder to retain moisture as your collagen and elastin levels start to drop.
LEARN TO PAMPER YOURSELF
Stress, tiredness and busy lives especially with kids can make us more prone to spending less time looking after our selves. Unfortunately without realising, old age and wrinkles can gradually start to break out. By taking some time out every now and again, try to make time to pamper yourself. Sometimes just taking time to unwind and do stress reducing rituals such as taking a nice bubble bath at home or by lighting some candles around the tub while while enjoying your bath soak. If time and money allows, book yourself in for a spa day for the perfect relaxing break your body needs.
MAINTAIN A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE AND EXERCISE REGULARLY
If you smoke or maintain an unhealthy diet, your skin will start looking dull, aged, and creased long before it’s time. Routine exercise will provide the blood flow, nutrient and oxygen delivery, that your skin needs for maintaining a bright, vibrant appearance.
Drinking plenty of water will keep the dermis supple and soft. Along with a healthy diet, this will promote skin health at every layer. If you smoke, consider stopping as it will not only reverse some of the more superficial signs of facial aging. But it will prevent cracking in your smooth collagen layer that might ultimately create problems such as smoker’s lines (peri-oral wrinkles) and deep, static creases that remain visible on the face even when your expressive facial muscles are completely at rest.
